Don’t Look Now, But Social Media is Taking Control of Virtual Reality

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a stressful week of dealing with kid issues, a pandemic, work, and writing. Because I had a lot on my plate, I didn’t get a lot of writing done, but that’s okay. I needed to take a little break and refuel.

But enough about that, today I want to talk about a trend I see happening. First, I need to give you a little background, though.  Hubby and I were shopping for a virtual reality headset for the boys for Christmas. We found one we really liked because it wouldn’t be obsolete in two years. Anyway, we were all set to buy it when we discovered that in order to activate it, my son would have to open his own Facebook account.

We dug in our heels and didn’t buy it. We don’t want our kids having social media accounts right now. Especially after watching the show “Social Dilemma.” I remember after watching that show, I made the remark to my hubby that soon this is going to be seeping into the kids’ video games, and not two months later we run into the above scenario.

This is dangerous. The reason being that it’s giving social media platforms way too much control. They are changing human behavior by creating personalized click bait for each member. Their goal is to increase engagement, so your child will spend his free time on their site. Now that they’re invading video games, they’re going after the younger crowd. They’re looking to expand their customer base and more importantly they’re going to gather the same information about your child that they’re gathering about you.

social media, likes, engagement

I don’t know how we can stop this. Facebook bought the company that created the virtual headset my hubby wanted to get for our son, so they can require this. No one is stopping them. So, what happens when your child spends more time with their computer than they do with people? Loss of social graces, loss of the ability to communicate face to face, and the loss of empathy.

All these skills are needed to navigate today’s world. What happens if you as a parent do their do diligence and try to teach these skills to your children? They’ll be the only ones with these skills and get lost in a sea of dealing with socially inept humans. It’s a sad state of affairs. I’m not sure what we can do to stop this from happening.

Do we have the government regulate social media? Who trusts the government these days? What are your thoughts? Do you have any ideas? Leave a comment. I’d love to hear from you!

Giving Guns to our Teachers?

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a hectic week of revising. I’ve got two manuscripts that I’m trying to polish. The first one is polished and ready to query, and the second one is rough and needs polishing. It’s a never ending task that’s for sure.

No automatic alt text available.

Anyway, I was going to write a post about a couple of books I’d recommend but then I saw the above graphic and decided to write about this latest response to the tragic mass shooting in Florida instead.

It would be a horrible mistake to give our teachers guns. First of all, there are very few teachers that I know of who’ve had combat training. This is a big deal when you’re tasked with shooting at another human being.  Aside from that glaring problem, are we going to give our teachers assault weapons?

Because let’s be honest, we can’t expect a teacher to go after a kid carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with a teeny tiny hand gun.

As a parent, I’m horrified by this idea. We’re just adding more guns to an already volatile situation. What does that mean, more deaths and one of those deaths could be your kid.

I’m sorry but that’s the ugly truth.

The only answer to this situation is to keep assault weapons out of the hands of civilians. No civilian needs an assault weapon. They are guns designed for combat. They are not meant to be used for hunting or target shooting.

Let’s take a look at Japan. They’ve only had thirteen mass shootings since 1922.

Photo credit: Leo Reynolds on Visualhunt / CC BY-NC-SA

According to the Mass Shooting Tracker we (US) had TWENTY ONE mass shootings in 2017 alone. Unbelievable.  (On a side note it’s incredibly sad that we even have a Mass Shooting Tracker.)

What is Japan doing that we’re not. Stricter Gun Laws and that’s it.

Here’s a list of some of the laws:

  • You have to attend an all-day class
  • Take a written exam and pass a shooting-range test with a mark of at least 95%.
  • There are also mental health and drugs tests.
  • Your criminal record is checked and police look for links to extremist groups. Then they check your relatives too – and even your work colleagues.

For a more complete list click here: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-38365729

Arming our teachers is not the answer. They’ve got enough on their plates from dealing with behavioral issues in the classroom to coping with all the testing they have to do. If we want a public school system, we have to protect our teachers and our children while they’re in school.

We also need to bring our communities closer together. Isolation is a huge indicator for a mass shooter. If our communities were able to eradicate isolation, mass shootings will decline and maybe even disappear altogether.

I know this is a hot topic and there’s always more than one solution. I’d love to read your thoughts. Leave a comment. I’d love to hear from you!

My thoughts on “Dirty Money”

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a busy week. I don’t know about you, but it seems to me life is getting busier and busier, and there aren’t enough hours in the day. I’ve made progress on my writing as well. I’ve completed the edits on one of my manuscripts and I’m super excited about this story. It’s coming together and it has evolved into such an amazing story. It’s my best work yet!

But enough about that, today I’d like to talk about a series I found on Netflix. It’ called “Dirty Money” and it was eye opening to say the least. There are six episodes and each one illustrates the level of corruption in our world and the corruption is global.

The first one caught my attention. It’s the story about how Volkswagen lied to consumers by stating they had anti-pollution devices installed on the VW Bug, when in fact they did not. The devices were actually disabled after they were tested in the factory by management.  They got caught, but no one went to jail.

Another documentary in this same series that caught my attention is the story on how the bank HSBC laundered money for the drug cartels. It goes on to illustrate how high ranking bank officials knew it was happening but did nothing to stop it.

This makes the war on drugs a huge joke.

I don’t want to say too much about the actual stories because I don’t want to ruin it for everyone, but when you watch the series you’ll find a common theme throughout. The unbridled greed of corporate leaders and the lengths they’ll go to get those billions of dollars.

In the series, you’ll find very few people actually went to prison after getting caught. Out of the six episodes, there are only two instances of jail time. That’s horrible.

The one about Scott Tucker who was actually sentenced to sixteen years in prison after his payday scheme was discovered, shows the delusional thinking of corporate leaders.  It’s staggering.

Just a heads up. The last episode is on Trump. 🙂

Below is the link to the trailer. You’ll want to watch this series. Trust me.

Should Humans Hibernate?

Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today after a busy week of Christmas shopping, Christmas concerts, writing, and working. It feels good to sit down and catch my breath. I love the Christmas season, but it does wear me out.

Photo by Hindrik S on Visual Hunt / CC BY-NC-SA

One day while I was standing in one of the many lines waiting to check out, my mind began to wander and this question floated to the surface of my brain: Are humans supposed to hibernate?

As I slowly moved forward, the wheels in my brain started to turn. I don’t know about you but when winter hits, it’s harder for me to get up in the morning and I want to go to bed earlier at night.

Photo on Visual hunt

This increased need for sleep has me thinking that us humans may be fighting our natural instinct to hibernate in the winter like so many animals do. Not only animals but plants, too. Many of them become dormant in the winter and start growing again in the spring.

It makes me wonder if the world would be a better place if we all just slowed down and took a long winter’s nap. Maybe that’s the natural order of things, and we’re going against the grain. That’s why everyone’s so grumpy. It’s possible, don’t you think?

Photo on VisualHunt.com

A winter’s nap would cure many things. For example, road rage. If we hibernate in the winter everyone would be getting enough sleep. People would be less likely to fly off the handle when they’re on the road.

It would be the cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder. This disorder is a form of depression that’s triggered by the changing seasons. Mainly winter. Maybe we’re getting depressed because we’re supposed to be sleeping during this time instead of slogging around in the slush and snow.

I wonder how it would affect our economy if we were to sleep during the long winter months. I know my first thought is it would hurt us. It makes sense if we weren’t producing we wouldn’t have any product to sell, but on closer inspection I think it would actually help us.

Photo on Visual hunt

Why? Because we’d have to work with our competitors. After all, every continent experiences winter at a different time. While one is sleeping the other could be going into high production mode and produce goods and services for the one continent that’s in hibernation mode.

We’d have to communicate and rely on our fellow earth dwellers. We’d have to cooperate, eliminating competition. Global cooperation. Now that’s a goal worth striving for, don’t you think?

Photo on Visual Hunt

I know what you’re thinking, what about those countries that don’t have winter? It’s true some don’t have quite as dramatic changes in season as others, but they all experience times when days are shorter than others. So, they are affected as well, just not to the same degree as other continents. So, it could still work.

Hibernation. Maybe those wild woodland animals are on to something. Could it really be that simple?

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. What do you think? Could hibernation be the answer to our global unrest? Leave a comment. I’d love to hear from you!

The Power of Words

Hello everyone. I hope all is well with you. I’m back today to talk about the power of words.  2017 has started off with a bang. First we’ve had the march on Washington, and now we have this new executive order where citizens from certain countries aren’t allowed to enter the US. Then we had a judge issue a nationwide stay on part of Trump’s executive order. It has been an eventful weekend that’s for sure.

Photo via VisualHunt

These are interesting times to be living in to say the least. The events from this weekend illustrate the need for good communication. From my research, I’ve gathered that Trump’s executive order was confusing. Of course, I don’t know if it’s true or not, we can’t believe the media these days, but that’s another blog post for another day. 🙂

Right now the English language is deteriorating into text messages and a kind of digital short hand. For the most part, that’s okay, we text every day, but we don’t write executive orders every day. That doesn’t mean we don’t need to learn how to write professional documents and letters because we do.

Photo via Visual hunt

Regardless of the political climate, we still need to communicate via the written word. We still need to create legal documents, contracts, write prescriptions, and medical information. If we don’t know how to write this type of information, confusion will be the result.

Now more than ever, we need to have the ability to communicate. People have taken to social media as a way to spout their beliefs. That’s okay, what’s not okay is the dissension it’s causing among friends and family members. The way we’re communicating is destroying friendships and splitting families up. We need to turn this trend around.

Photo via Visual Hunt

Part of communication is listening to the other side. Listening to their concerns and taking them into consideration. In a marriage, you have to negotiate. You have to listen to your partner and take into consideration what his or her needs and desires are. A very wise friend once told me, when you’re in a stalemate with your partner, you’ll have to accept that you won’t get your way and neither will he, but there’s a third alternative that you both can live with. I think that concept applies to our world today. We need to find an alternative we all can live with.

The only way to do that is by sharing our beliefs without attacking the other side. So when you choose to write something or to speak, choose your words wisely. Your words have the power to create dissension or encourage peace. I say let’s work toward peace. After all, we only have one earth and we all want to live here. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. Do you have any ideas how we can move forward peacefully? I’d love to read your views, leave a comment and share them with all of us!

Can We make America Great Again?

Hello everyone. I hope all is well with you. I’ve been working diligently on this new revision of my WIP and I’m loving how it is coming together. It’s almost done and I can’t wait to start the editing process and tightening it up. I feel this is my best work yet, but that remains to be seen! 😉

Anyway, yesterday was a momentous day in history. Where millions of women around the world marched in protest of Trump being sworn in as president. I didn’t go, but I did see some of the footage. I heard Scarlett Johansson’s speech as well as Madonna’s. It was Scarlett’s speech that got me thinking, though.

Photo credit: Mobilus In Mobili via VisualHunt.com / CC BY-SA

She was advocating to keep Planned Parenthood operational, to keep funding this organization and I agree with her. This is a vital organization for all women to get the health care we need in regards to our reproductive health.

I know. Everyone is screaming we don’t have the money. We can’t sustain the government funding. I hear you, so let’s look at where the gluttony is in our society.  Let’s look where we can trim the fat, so to speak.

Instead of cutting government spending. Let’s get rid of some of these tax shelters for the rich. All these CEOs who earn millions and take their money overseas to avoid paying taxes let’s close that avenue. Make them pay their taxes. I bet we wouldn’t have to worry about funding if we did that.

Photo via VisualHunt

And while we’re at it, let’s take a long hard look at these insurance companies  and banks where the CEOs and the CFOs are raking in millions of dollars while at the same time their company is going bankrupt. We have money to bail out these organizations, but we don’t have money for Planned Parenthood? Does anyone else see a problem with this?

I know what you’re thinking. But Lisa these are the people who can afford to pay lobbyists, who can afford to contribute large sums of money to political campaigns. Yes. That’s true, and the inherent problem with our political system because most donations come with strings attached. And that’s why our current system no longer works. If we can somehow change this part of the process we can truly make America great again.

Thanks for reading my post today. Do you have any ideas on how we can change our political system? I’d love to read your thoughts! Leave a comment! 🙂
