Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’ve been busy editing my second story and working. It was a productive week, and I was so ready for the weekend. We had a fun Saturday night. A night where I put my foot down, and we had an evening of “forced family fun.”
For those who don’t know what “forced family fun” is, it’s just what the name implies. I force my kids to do something with us. They reluctantly participate in whatever I’ve planned. I try not to inundate them with too many events like this because I know they need their space as teens. But I figure once in awhile isn’t too much to ask, and they’re getting older. Sniff. The family moments are becoming less frequent, and I must say, I’m having a hard time letting go. But I digress.
We went as a family to a drive-in and watched the new “Top Gun” movie. Now, my boys have never been to a drive-in, and I wanted to give them the experience. So, we packed up the car and drove the forty-five minutes to the outdoor theater.
Unbeknownst to me, things have changed since my teen years of drive-in movies. There are no speakers you hang on your window so you can hear the movie. Now, you tune in to a radio station. It works wonderfully, except I had to deal with the fear that my battery would die, and I’d be stranded at the drive-in after the movie was over. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. Phew. I would’ve never lived that one down.
Everyone liked the movie. It was action-packed. A lot of flying scenes. I loved the camaraderie the movie illustrated among the team of select pilots. When the going got tough they stuck together, working with each other as they confronted their obstacles and moved forward. I’m glad my boys saw that part. For an evening of “forced family fun,” it was a success. I’m planning more evenings like this. My boys don’t know that yet, but they’ll find out soon enough. 😉
My oldest really liked the movie, I could tell it inspired him. It will probably inspire you, too. It had a great storyline. I loved how they weaved scenes and photos from the first movie in with this one. I’m going to go see it again. It was that good. But this time it’ll be in a theater. How about you? My nineteen year old has been talking about the movie for two years (since the release was delayed) and we saw it and absolutely loved it! The flight sequences were amazing, with all the footage in the cockpit. And the references to the original movie were woven in seemlessly. There were just enough surprises to catch me off guard, which I loved.
I did, too! And so did my boys. It was a win for me as a Mom who has to do “forced family fun” with my teens. They’re busy trying to figure out who they are, but every once in a while you need a break from that, right? 😉 I’m going to see it again in a theater. I’m sure there are parts I missed.
Wait…you’re boys have never been to a drive-in? Wow, I feel old! LOL! Sounds like you and your family had a great time. Have they seen the original Top Gun? If not, you should rent or download it for another forced family night. Wink. Cheers, girlfriend!

Talk about feeling old… when we got to the drive-in I was looking for the speakers to listen to the movie. I had to ask someone how to listen and that’s when I found out about using your radio. Good idea to spend family time together. I haven’t even seen top gun, the first one. It was a blockbuster movie. We don’t have drive in theatres here.
Yes. It was fun. Both boys loved the movie. I highly recommend it! You’re not missing much with the drive ins. It will probably be better in the theater. 🙂
Well, I guess drive-ins are more popular in America. There are barely a few in India and were built in the 1980s-1990s.
That’s when they were most popular in the US, too. Some still remain. Going to the drive-in sure brought back memories. My boys would’ve preferred the theater I think. But I knew it’d be crowded. Thta’s a good logic. I guess they were popular in the US because it was a country with large penetration of cars..the biggest car market in the world? I guess with COVID people have started appreciating open spaces and fresh air, so may be there might be a renewed interest in drive in theatres.
Ahhh… an astute observation my friend. Time will tell, I’m sure. I think you’re right about the car market observation as well. The car was invented here and mass produced so it would stand to reason we’d have more drive-ins. 🙂

Hi Lisa, thanks for the follow. Looking forward to following your blog. They closed down just about all the drive-ins around us. I think I saw as many movies at a drive-in as I did in a theatre when I was young. Good to hear there are places you can still experience that outdoor moviegoing setting. Top Gun: Maverick to me was as good if not better than the original. And, when I was young I also recall “forced family fun”…which really did turn out to be fun. Thanks again, Bruce
