Hello everyone, I hope all is well with you. I’m back today and I’m sharing my one little word for this year. This is my first time participating in the One Little Word event, so I’ve put a lot of thought into my word. I came up with a very simple one, but it does illustrate what I want to achieve this year.
That word is:
LISTEN

I know. A little anti-climactic, after all I was thinking about words like Intuition, Commitment, and Inspiration.
However, as I thought about my one little word. I realized that I needed an action word. Something that would guide me in my everyday life.
That’s why I chose Listen.
I want to turn down the volume and Listen to my Intuition. My inner voice will guide me and help me to make the choices I need to make, but I’ve got to get in the habit of really Listening to it.
I also need to listen to my kids and hubby. And when I say listen I mean, listen to understand and not listen to reply. As a society we tend to think about how we’re going to respond to someone as opposed to trying to understand what they’re saying. So I’m going to work on this one.
I want to listen to my friends more so they feel more understood and I’ll get to know them on a deeper level.
So there you have it. My one little word for 2016. Thanks for stopping by and reading my post. I’d love to hear what you think of my word, leave a comment. Do you have one little word you’d like to share?

Listening to understand is something I need to do more of. This word has the potential to be life changing. Good luck!
Thanks Leigh Anne. I thought so too. 🙂
It’s a great word! I love the idea of listening to understand rather than listening to reply. Food for thought…
Thanks for stopping by Dana! I appreciate your kind words! 🙂
Hey Lisa, ! love your word! I still haven’t chosen one to stick with the whole year, but I’m leaning toward balance. Glad to see what you’re up to 🙂
Thanks Mrs. Clark! I appreciate you stopping by. I love how you said,”leaning toward balance!” Balance is a good word and that’s something I’m striving for as well. I hope your January is off to a good start! 🙂
Lisa, Listening is a great word. When we truly listen it is a gift to ourselves and a gift to the person we are listening to. Bernadette
Thanks Bernadette! I appreciate your kind words and I hope your January is going well. We’ve had a snow day here so me and the kiddos have bundled up and stayed inside. I’ve started another work in process and I’m excited about that. I’ve got a good start on it. We’ll see where it goes. 🙂
I love this:
And when I say listen I mean, listen to understand and not listen to reply. As a society we tend to think about how we’re going to respond to someone as opposed to trying to understand what they’re saying.
That’s what I hope I am fostering in my classroom as well.
Thanks for stopping by Tara. That’s awesome that you’re fostering listening skills in your classroom. Where would we be without our teachers? I hate to even imagine it! Keep up the good work!
Yo, Lisa! Yes, great word choice. Now, if I were choosing one little word for this year, it would have to be FOCUS. Need to get back on track! Cheers!
Thanks for stopping by Sharon! I thought of Focus too, but decided on listen, because I wanted it to encompass my family life as well. Good luck with the writing! You can do it! 🙂
Great word!
Thanks Suzie! I hope your January is going well!
“Listen” to me when I say that your blog is motivational and heart-warming, Lisa ❤
Awww…thanks Christy! I’m so glad to hear that! 🙂 You’re so sweet!
Listen is a great word! My word for 2016 is Execute. The last several years, I’ve chosen words that are nouns (& that has worked out very well) but it felt like 2016 needed to be a year of actually taking action. I’ve made the plans, I’ve laid the foundation, now it’s time to actually get on it and execute. I’m excited about what is in store. On another note, for the last two years I’ve been able to get my husband to choose a word as well. This year his word is Persistence because he has some huge projects to tackle and it won’t be easy.
I love your words! Execute sounds so authoritative and determined. You’re taking charge. I love it. I’ve always loved the word persistence because I think it’s a building block to success. We must persist and overcome our obstacles. 🙂 Love your words. It’d be interesting to touch base at the end of the year and see how our words shaped the year for us and how they helped us progress. 🙂
I really like seeing what word people choose, and listen is really fantastic, especially as you explained it. I often feel that I need to do a better job of really listening and not just listening to respond, as you said. Hope the word guides you well this year!
Thanks for stopping by Bev. I appreciate your kind words and so far Listen has been a good word for 2016. 🙂
I love the idea of having an action word, and that you are using it in a couple of different ways. Very smart! I chose kindness as my word, but I think it needs a little more work in my life. 😉
Thanks for stopping by Jamie. I like kindness. There can never be too much of it in the world. I’m enjoying this one little word thread. It’s fun to see what everyone else is doing. It gives us all a little peek into our lives, don’t you think?
The power of one word is pretty amazing!
It definitely is! 🙂
Thanks for coming in to see me at Steve Says…come again, stay a while – have a drink even! Happy blogging. Cheers, Steve…
Thanks for the invite, Steve! I’ll definitely do that! Cheers to you and I hope your January is going well! 🙂
Hi Lisa. Wanted to check out your blog and came across this post. Really love your word. I listen to students everyday as a counselor, but I need to work on listening to my own children. My son told me I don’t allow him to complete his thoughts and he is right. He tells me something and I start to give my opinion on it and sometimes he wants me to just listen. Best wishes to the new year and with your new word. Mine this year is Focus and I wrote about it as well.
Thanks for stopping by Lowanda and sharing your word with us. I thought about focus myself, but decided on listen because it’s something I feel I need to work on. 🙂 I’m so full of ideas that sometimes I jump in with an idea to solve the problem, but sometimes it’s better to listen and let my kids work out the problems by themselves. Since I’ve been trying to do this…I’ve noticed how hard it is to do. 🙂 Good luck with your efforts for 2016. I’d love to hear how your word effected your year. 🙂
